Under His Care: A 52-Week Journey with the Shepherd

Week 6 - Power: The Shepherd Who Protects and Covers You

Psalms 23:4–5 - “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.”

Scripture Focus

  • Primary: Psalm 23:4–5

  • Supporting: Luke 10:19; 2 Timothy 1:7

Shepherd’s Insight

Power in Psalm 23 is not loud, it is steady. It is not aggressive, it is assuring. David says the rod and the staff comfort him. That means the Shepherd’s authority creates peace, not panic.

The rod represents protection. It was used to defend the sheep against predators. The staff represents guidance and correction. It pulled sheep back when they wandered toward danger.

This is the kind of power the Shepherd exercises; protective and directional. He does not merely watch from a distance; He actively guards, guides, and governs. Notice also that the valley still exists. The enemies are still present. Power does not remove every threat, it establishes confidence in the Shepherd’s authority over them. This week, the Shepherd invites you to stop living defensively and start living confidently. You are not exposed. You are not unguarded. You are covered.

Formation Thought

God’s power does not eliminate the valley, it secures you within it. Comfort comes from knowing who holds authority over your life.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where in your life do you feel most vulnerable or unprotected?

  2. Do you tend to fight your battles alone, or do you trust God’s authority?

  3. How might your posture change if you truly believed you were covered?

Prayer

Good Shepherd,Thank You for Your protection and authority over my life.Guard my heart, guide my steps, and correct me when I drift.Help me live boldly, not because I am strong, but because You are powerful and present.I trust Your rod and Your staff.Amen.

Weekly Practice

Practice Confidence. When fear or insecurity rises this week, declare aloud:“The Lord is my Shepherd. I will not fear.”Then move forward in obedience instead of hesitation.
