Under His Care: A 52-Week Journey with the Shepherd

Week 5 - Purpose: The Shepherd Who Leads You in the Right Path

Psalms 23:3 - “He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”

Scripture Focus

  • Primary: Psalm 23:3

  • Supporting: Proverbs 3:5 - 6; Ephesians 2:10

Shepherd’s Insight

Purpose in Psalm 23 is not self-discovered, it is shepherd-directed. David does not say he found his own path. He says,“He leadeth me.” Purpose begins with surrender.

The “paths of righteousness” are not merely moral roads; they are aligned roads, paths that reflect the character and reputation of the Shepherd. When God leads us, He does so “for His name’s sake.” That means our lives become reflections of His integrity, faithfulness, and goodness.

Purpose is often misunderstood as visibility, achievement, or status. But in Psalm 23, purpose looks like following faithfully. The sheep’s role is not to map the journey but to stay near the Shepherd. Direction unfolds through obedience.

This week invites you to release ambition-driven living and embrace alignment-driven living. When you follow the Shepherd closely, you don’t have to chase purpose, you will walk in it.

Formation Thought

Purpose is revealed through obedience, not ambition. The right path is found by staying close to the Shepherd.

Reflection Questions

  1. Where in your life are you seeking clarity about direction or calling?

  2. Are there areas where you are trying to force a path instead of following God’s leading?

  3. What would change if your primary focus became faithfulness rather than recognition?

Prayer

Good Shepherd,Lead me in the paths that honor You.Guard me from chasing what looks impressive but is misaligned.Teach me to value obedience over applause.I trust that as I follow You, my purpose will unfold in Your timing. Amen.

Weekly Practice

Practice Alignment. Before making decisions this week, big or small, pause and pray:“Lord, is this path aligned with You?”Allow His peace and Word to guide your steps.
